BIOgraphy
Cora Jane Glasser
feels an affinity with so-called primitive and outsider art, perhaps
because her
early studies in anthropology have influenced her paintings. Not
surprisingly,
she considers her interest in anthropology a natural outgrowth
of her art, which came first in her life, before almost anything
else
she can remember. Travels to sites in the American Southwest,
Mexico, South America, Italy and Alaska have reinforced the connection
between her art and early cultures. She sees fine art, craft and
daily life
as part of a continuum, less a function of schooling than of
unmediated
experience. Glassers abstract art employs encaustic, a method
of setting pigment with wax that recalls the surfaces of worn-down
ancient structures.
Recently,
Glasser has been developing a body of work inspired by the ubiquitous
construction
sites and
public transportation of her native New York City. "I see
these noisy, energetic and colorful images as I might imagine an
ancient
thriving metropolis", Glasser states. We are, every day,
experiencing what will be unearthed by the archeologists of the
future. I want
my art to convey the fascination this holds, and to create new
ways of noticing what goes on around us every day.
